Samuel Jaye Tanner is an associate professor of education at the University of Iowa. Sam earned his Ph.D. in critical literacy and English education at the University of Minnesota. His research concerns whiteness, improvisation, and democratic education. Sam’s recent book, Whiteness, Pedagogy, and Youth in America, was selected by the National Council of Teachers of English as the 2020 recipient of the David H. Russell Award for Distinguished Research in the Teaching of English. Sam has published in Review in Education Research, Journal of Literacy Research, and Urban Education.
